The European Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care is the leading European organisation for members and national societies in anaesthesiology, intensive care, pain and perioperative medicine and brings together more than 7,000 individual members and 43 national societies. Around 270 medical specialists also volunteer across the ESAIC’s committees and subcommittees.

Euroanaesthesia is at the heart of this community. Each year, the congress welcomes around 6,000 healthcare professionals from across the world. It offers a dynamic hub of learning, innovation and collaboration. A wide range of interactive workshops, such as the SimLab, offers participants an immersive learning environment with realistic and often complex clinical scenarios, combining high-fidelity simulation and practical procedural training.

Euroanaesthesia also provides an exceptional platform for industry engagement. The highly successful Innovation Talks brought together ESAIC key opinion leaders and industry experts to explore trends and innovations along the Perioperative Patient Journey, fostering meaningful dialogue between clinicians and industry partners.

Join us next year in Copenhagen from 29 to 31 May for another inspiring edition of Euroanaesthesia.

Supporting knowledge and professional growth

The ESAIC supports continuous professional development through the ESAIC Academy, offering a wide range of educational opportunities for different learning needs and career stages. From free webinars and podcasts to comprehensive online courses, learners can access high-quality education whenever and wherever it suits them.

Each year, the ESAIC focuses on selected themes across anaesthesiology, intensive care, perioperative and pain medicine. A range of educational formats combines scientific updates, practical insights and discussion, supporting anaesthesiologists from trainees to experienced specialists.

Beyond scientific education, the ESAIC offers distinctive professional development programmes, including the Exchange Programme giving trainees the opportunity to gain experience in leading European centres, Train the Trainer Programme dedicated to developing educational skills, Research Mentorship Programme and the recently launched European Leadership Programme. These initiatives help anaesthesiologists develop new skills, build professional networks and become part of a truly European community.

The ESAIC is also renowned for the European Diploma in Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care, taking place all around Europe and beyond, supporting thousands of candidates every year in advancing their professional development and careers.

Advancing research and clinical practice

The ESAIC remains committed to supporting outstanding research activities through its well-established Clinical Trial Network, connecting institutions, clinicians and scientists internationally to improve patient care across anaesthesiology, intensive care, perioperative, emergency and pain medicine.

With a primary focus on observational studies, more than 20 studies have been selected, involving over 150,000 patients and resulting in 75 publications from 15 completed studies. In 2026, over €300,000 was awarded through EJA-ESAIC and ESAIC-BJA grants to support these research initiatives.

For more information on joining a research project, or registering for a masterclass or mentorship programme, visit the ESAIC research pages.

ESAIC guidelines translate the latest evidence into trusted recommendations, harmonising clinical practice across Europe and advancing patient safety and standards of care.

The Society has published 33 clinical guidelines with six more in development, alongside nine ongoing external collaborations.

Its journals, the European Journal of Anaesthesiology and the open-access European Journal of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care, share research and evidence with the international community.

Advancing safer and more sustainable care

Patient safety and environmental sustainability remain strategic priorities. The Helsinki Declaration on Patient Safety in Anaesthesiology 2.0 was signed in 2025, while the Glasgow Declaration continues to encourage more sustainable clinical practice.
